During the period of the occupation of the Channel Islands by German forces many major works of fortification and consolidation were undertaken. The title ‘Brutalist Architecture’ could be applied aptly to the fortresses which were built on Guernsey from 1943. These monumental modernist structures dominate the coastline of the island and add a strange stark beauty to the landscape.
We hope to find out how these impressive forts were built, by whom, and who designed them and their antecedents in the design life of the Bauhaus – the design school closed only a short time previously when the Nazi regime took power. There are other impressive structures on the island and we are sure that our guest speaker Amanda Johns will talk to us about some of these also. She regularly guides visitors on the island and is very familiar with the history of these intriguing buildings, so we look forward to an interesting and enthralling illustrated talk.
